MELA is a seemingly simple picture book written by Maddelena Schlavo and illustrated by Eleonora Pace. The minimal text is as crisp and bright as the cover illustration, as direct and satisfying as a bite into a perfectly-ripe apple, as open to partnership with the reader as MELA eventually becomes open to her new partner in life.
Illustrations alternate between isolated images on stark white backgrounds that focus attention fully on major or spot illustrations, while others are full double-spread art that encompasses the larger story of the intended home for MELA, of the locations, and the depth of feelings and situations that must be dealt with before their intended connection is completed.
After years of abandonment, unspoken details, and eventual travel, the girl waits and plans, with hope, while the dog waits and wonders, without assurance. Scenes throughout suggest (but don't overdo) the kinds of adjustments that MELA (which means apple) must make in her new home. Storms disturb, but so do vacuums and traffic noise and busy streets and even nightmares. Throughout it all, MELA becomes able to trust. To turn to her new family for reassurance and safety. To know she is home.
Sounds simple? Yes.
Easy? No.
Important? Absolutely.
The art and story are equally beautiful. Even so, had this book, originally published in Italy, not been translated to English, I believe it is such a universal story and so wonderfully visualized that it would be fully understood and embraced even without translation.
I hope you'll give it a look and see if you agree.
